Buhoma is located in southwestern Uganda, approximately 430 km from Kampala. The most common way to get here is by road (8 to 10 hours in a 4x4 vehicle). You can also fly from Entebbe to Kihihi airstrip (1 hour) and drive the remaining 1.5 hours. Two main driving routes exist: the northern route via Mbarara and Kabale, and the southern route via Queen Elizabeth National Park and Ishasha.

Option 1: Driving from Kampala
Driving is the most popular way to reach Buhoma. Most visitors either hire a 4x4 with a driver through a tour operator, rent a self-drive 4x4 from Kampala, or travel as part of an organized safari. There are two main routes:
Northern Route via Mbarara and Kabale
This is the shorter and more commonly used route at approximately 430 km. The road is fully tarmacked from Kampala to Kabale via Masaka and Mbarara on the main Kampala-Kabale highway. From Kabale, you drive north through Kanungu District to Buhoma. The last 20 to 30 km is unpaved murram road that can be challenging in wet conditions.

Southern Route via Ishasha and Queen Elizabeth National Park
This route is about 450 km and takes 9 to 11 hours, but it passes through Queen Elizabeth National Park where you may spot elephants, buffalo, and the famous tree-climbing lions of Ishasha. The road from Ishasha to Buhoma crosses through the southern sectors of Bwindi and is largely unpaved.
- Kampala to Kasese: 370 km, about 5 to 6 hours via Fort Portal or Mbarara
- Kasese to Ishasha: 80 km through QENP, about 2 hours
- Ishasha to Buhoma: 90 km, about 3 to 4 hours on rough roads
Many visitors drive one route going and the other returning. The combination of the northern route in and southern route out (or vice versa) creates a loop that covers more of southwestern Uganda.
Option 2: Domestic Flights
If you want to avoid the long drive, domestic flights are an excellent option. Two airlines operate scheduled flights from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airfield to airstrips near Bwindi:
Kihihi Airstrip
Kihihi is the closest airstrip to Buhoma, located about 65 km away (1.5 hours by road). This is the preferred option for reaching the Buhoma sector. Aerolink Uganda and Fly Uganda operate daily scheduled flights. Flight time is approximately 1 hour. One-way fares range from $250 to $380 USD per person.
Kisoro Airstrip
Kisoro is further south and closer to the Nkuringo and Rushaga sectors of Bwindi. From Kisoro, the drive to Buhoma takes about 2.5 to 3 hours. This airstrip is better suited if you are visiting the southern Bwindi sectors.
Charter Flights
Charter flights are available for groups or travelers who want flexibility with timing. A charter from Entebbe to Kihihi typically costs $1,500 to $3,000 for the entire aircraft (seating 4 to 12 passengers depending on the plane). Your lodge or tour operator can arrange charters.
Option 3: From Kigali, Rwanda
Kigali is only about 5 to 6 hours from Buhoma by road, making it a viable entry point — especially for travelers combining Rwanda and Uganda. The route crosses into Uganda at the Cyanika or Katuna border post, then continues through Kisoro and Kabale to Buhoma. You will need a valid Uganda visa.
The Cyanika border (via Musanze/Ruhengeri) is typically faster and less busy than the Katuna border. From Cyanika, it is about 3 to 4 hours to Buhoma via Kisoro and Kanungu.
Road Conditions and Tips
The main highways in Uganda are generally in good condition and fully tarmacked. However, once you leave the main roads heading toward Buhoma, conditions deteriorate significantly:
- Dry season (June to September, December to February): Murram roads are dusty but manageable. A 4x4 is still recommended but conditions are generally good.
- Rainy season (March to May, October to November): Roads can become very muddy and slippery. A 4x4 with good tires is essential. Some sections may be slow going.
- Fuel: Fill up in Kabale or Kanungu. Fuel is available in Butogota (about 1 hour from Buhoma) but stations can sometimes run dry.
- Night driving: Strongly discouraged on all Ugandan roads. Plan to arrive before dark (around 6:30 PM).
- Speed bumps: Expect frequent speed bumps through every town and trading center along the route.
Breaking Up the Journey
The drive from Kampala to Buhoma is long and tiring. Many travelers break the journey with an overnight stop along the way:
- Lake Bunyonyi (near Kabale) — A stunning crater lake with islands, about 2.5 hours from Buhoma. A popular overnight stop with several lakeside lodges.
- Mbarara — Uganda's second-largest city, roughly halfway from Kampala. Good hotels and restaurants.
- Lake Mburo National Park — About 3.5 hours from Kampala. A compact park good for a quick game drive and overnight.
- Queen Elizabeth National Park — If taking the southern route, spend a night and enjoy a boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel.
