Overview of the Four Bwindi Sectors
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park covers 331 square kilometres of ancient montane forest in southwestern Uganda. The park is home to roughly half the world's remaining mountain gorillas — approximately 460 individuals across more than 50 gorilla families. Of those, around 20 families are fully habituated to human presence and available for trekking.
The park is divided into four sectors, each with its own park headquarters, gorilla families, accommodation options, and access routes. The sectors are not connected by road within the park — travelling between them requires exiting and driving around the forest.
Each sector attracts a different type of visitor. Understanding the differences helps you match your trek to your priorities — whether that is convenience and infrastructure, proximity to Rwanda, dramatic landscapes, or the extended habituation experience.

Buhoma — The Classic Choice
Buhoma is where gorilla trekking in Uganda began. The sector opened to tourists in 1993, making it the most established and historically significant gorilla trekking destination in the country. The park headquarters at Buhoma serves as the logistical hub of the entire park, and its head start over other sectors is evident in every aspect of the visitor experience.
With five fully habituated gorilla families available for daily treks, Buhoma offers the highest number of permits in any single sector — up to 40 permits per day. This makes it easier to secure a booking on short notice compared to sectors with fewer families. The gorilla families in Buhoma include some of Uganda's most well-known groups, habituated over decades and completely comfortable with close human presence.
Access to Buhoma is straightforward. The drive from Kampala or Entebbe takes 8–9 hours via the main southwestern highway through Mbarara and Kabale, then northwest to Buhoma. Alternatively, a charter flight from Entebbe to Kihihi Airstrip reduces the journey to under 2 hours in the air, followed by a 1.5-hour scenic drive to the park gate.
Buhoma's accommodation range is unmatched by any other sector. The village immediately surrounding the park headquarters offers everything from community-owned budget guesthouses at $25–$60 per night to mid-range forest lodges at $100–$250, and some of Uganda's finest luxury wilderness camps at $350–$600+. Whether you are travelling on a shoestring or seeking a high-end experience, Buhoma delivers options that no other sector can match.
The terrain in Buhoma is moderately challenging. Trails descend from the village into the forest, with gradients that vary from gentle to steep depending on where the gorilla family has moved. Most treks last 2–5 hours of walking. The forest floor is root-covered and can be muddy after rain, but the trails are well-maintained and rangers manage the pace carefully.
Nkuringo — Dramatic Scenery, Longer Approach
Nkuringo sits on a dramatic highland ridge in the southwestern corner of Bwindi, at an elevation of around 2,150 metres. The views from the Nkuringo area are extraordinary — on clear mornings, you can see across the Albertine Rift Valley and the Virunga volcanoes rising beyond the Democratic Republic of Congo border.
The sector has two habituated gorilla families available for trekking. With fewer permits available per day, Nkuringo feels more exclusive — groups are smaller and the overall atmosphere is quieter than Buhoma. Guides describe the Nkuringo gorilla families as particularly relaxed during human visits.
The trek itself is physically demanding in a distinctive way. The park boundary sits at the base of the ridge, which means trekkers must descend steeply from the Nkuringo village area down into the forest at the start, then climb back up on return. This makes the post-trek ascent one of the more strenuous sections of any Bwindi trek. Porters are strongly recommended here.
From Kampala, Nkuringo takes 10–11 hours to reach, routing through Kabale and then south toward the Kisoro area. The road quality deteriorates in the final stretch. Accommodation options are limited compared to Buhoma — a handful of well-regarded lodges are available, but the budget category is thin.
Nkuringo is an excellent choice for travellers who are combining Bwindi with a visit to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, who want to see the Virunga landscape without going to Rwanda, or who are travelling overland from Rwanda and want to enter Bwindi from the south.
Rushaga — Most Families, Habituation Experience
Rushaga is the largest sector by number of habituated gorilla families — six families available for standard trekking, plus an additional semi-habituated family for the gorilla habituation experience. This gives Rushaga the highest daily permit capacity of any sector, making it the best option for groups that need multiple permits for the same date.
The gorilla habituation experience is Rushaga's defining feature. Unlike a standard 1-hour gorilla trek, the habituation experience allows up to four people to spend the full day with a gorilla group that researchers and rangers are still in the process of habituating to humans. You observe normal gorilla behaviour — feeding, resting, playing, moving — for up to 4 hours. The permit costs $1,500 USD per person. It is a profound and rare wildlife encounter that is available nowhere else in Uganda.
Rushaga sits in the southern part of Bwindi at mid-elevation. The terrain is variable — some treks are relatively short and straightforward; others require sustained effort over several hours depending on where the gorilla family has moved. The forest in Rushaga is dense and the trails can be challenging after heavy rain.
The drive from Kampala to Rushaga takes 10–11 hours, routing through Mbarara, Kabale, and then east through Rubanda. Rushaga is also approximately 4–5 hours from Kigali, Rwanda, making it a natural choice for travellers crossing between the two countries. Accommodation has expanded in recent years, with several comfortable lodges and camps available, though the range is still narrower than Buhoma's.
Rushaga is the best sector if the habituation experience is your primary goal, if you are travelling from Rwanda, or if you are in a group and need flexibility on permit availability.
Ruhija — The Remote Alternative
Ruhija is the easternmost and least-visited of Bwindi's four sectors. Located at the highest elevation in the park — around 2,400 metres — it occupies a cloud forest zone that is frequently misty, cold, and atmospheric. Three gorilla families are available for trekking here.
The relative isolation of Ruhija is both its greatest appeal and its biggest limitation. Visitor numbers are low, which means encounters feel genuinely remote and unshared. The forest is pristine and the biodiversity remarkable — Ruhija is considered one of the best birdwatching sites in all of Africa, home to rare Albertine Rift endemics including the African green broadbill and Grauer's rush warbler.
Access to Ruhija routes through Kabale and the Ruhija trading centre, taking roughly 9 hours from Kampala. The final road to the sector headquarters can be rough. Accommodation options are very limited — a small number of basic and mid-range options exist, but the luxury category is essentially absent.
Ruhija is not the right choice for first-time visitors or those who want comfort and convenience alongside their gorilla trek. It is ideal for experienced Uganda travellers, birdwatchers, and those specifically seeking solitude and a sense of raw wilderness that the more developed sectors no longer fully provide.
Permit availability in Ruhija is usually good, even in peak season, because the sector sees fewer visitors. If you are booking late and Buhoma permits are sold out, Ruhija is worth considering — the gorilla experience itself is no different from any other sector once you are in the forest.
Which Sector Should You Choose?
The right sector depends on your travel style, logistics, budget, and what you want beyond the gorilla trek itself. Here is a practical decision guide:
First-time gorilla trekkers — Choose Buhoma
Buhoma's well-developed infrastructure, wide lodge range, experienced guides, and straightforward access from Kampala make it the natural starting point. Everything is set up to deliver a smooth, memorable experience. Come back for Rushaga or Ruhija on a future trip.
Budget travellers — Choose Buhoma
Buhoma has the only real budget accommodation in Bwindi — community guesthouses from $25 per night. Other sectors offer mid-range and luxury options but very little in the entry-level category. The drive time from Kampala to Buhoma is also shorter, reducing transport costs.
Habituation experience — Choose Rushaga
The gorilla habituation experience is only available in Rushaga. If spending 4 hours with a semi-habituated gorilla family is your goal, there is no choice to make. Book the $1,500 permit as far in advance as possible — only 4 spots are available per day.
Combining with Kigali or Rwanda — Choose Nkuringo or Rushaga
Both Nkuringo and Rushaga are 4–5 hours from Kigali by road, compared to 8+ hours for Buhoma. If you are flying into Kigali and crossing into Uganda for Bwindi, choosing a southern sector cuts your overland travel significantly. Rushaga offers more permit flexibility and better lodge options; Nkuringo adds the dramatic ridge scenery.
Birdwatchers and true wilderness — Choose Ruhija
Ruhija is the best sector for rare Albertine Rift birds and visitors who want solitude. If you can tolerate basic accommodation and are comfortable with the cold, high-elevation forest, Ruhija offers a gorilla trek combined with exceptional birdwatching that no other sector can replicate.
All four sectors offer the same core gorilla trekking experience: a maximum of 8 visitors per gorilla family per day, 1 hour of gorilla viewing time, and rangers and trackers who have spent years working with these specific families. The gorilla encounter itself is equally powerful regardless of sector. The differences lie in everything surrounding that one hour — the journey, the lodge, the landscape, and the extras.
